Hey all,

Summer officially got underway last week with the solstice, and I hope you're digging into all the fruits and vegetables that are now at peak of season. There's also no better time of year to get out and meet the animals at your local farm animal sanctuary. I just updated and expanded our directory, so give it a look to find a shelter near you. While it may seem to be merely an innocuous day outdoors, bringing omnivorous friends to a farm animal sanctuary is a life-changing experience; once you meet a few cows, pigs, and chickens it's very hard to return home and go back to your meat-eating ways.

This past week saw an historic advance for animals. President Obama signed a Cory Booker bill into law that not only limits animal testing, but condemns the practice. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when New Jersey elects a vegan senator. Link.

And to end with something off-topic, the most interesting article I've read this week is this one on reinforced concrete. In it you'll learn how the 20th Century built key infrastructure using a material that, rather than having the potential to endure for centuries, often crumbles away within decades. I don't know that there's ever been more telling example that reveals our current era's inability to think beyond one generation. Link.
